There has been a hotel in this Historic spot since 1892, when Herbert Logan built the 16-room Elk Creek Hotel, which marked the end of the rutted & dangerous Seaside-to-Portland toll road. Modern vehicles and the constant improvement of the Sunset Highway have made the journey much more enjoyable, but the tranquility of the destination remains unchanged.
Today, Ecola Creek Lodge, built in 1946 and originally called Bell Harbor, rests on the same site. This is believed to be the very location where Capt. William Clark and team camped while trading with the area Indians.
